E-books and learning

This site http://www.neirtec.org/reading_report/report.htm has a bunch of useful information about the use of technology to help children to read. I am especially interested in the use of e-books to improve fluency.

The good points about e-books include
  • being a good model of fluent oral reading
  • in-built help with decoding
  • visual highlighting of text to aid in reading with expression
  • different levels enable readers to challenge themselves
  • speech recognition
  • assessments can lead to further instructional designs
Hope that I can produce some quality work in this area to help my own students.

Hi Darrell,
I think e-books are excellent tools to support the development of fluency. It is an ideal medium because of its voice over text feature. With this voice over text feature, the teacher is afforded the opportunity to model the reading component desired. Because e-books are also equipped with next page button, previous page button, home button and sound button, the child can re-play the reading activity over and over until s/he has mastered the reading component being supported by the use of e-books.
In response to your closing statement, it was once said by Albert Einstein (many, many years ago, but I think it still has creditability) that, “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing others; it is the only means.” Therefore, once you are motivated to produce quality work, then your students will in turn be motivated to produce quality work. Keep your spirit high. I believe you can, and you will produce quality work. In fact, I can guarantee that when you start you will be pleasantly surprised by the vast expanse of your creativity. As Shasta said, “The sky is the [your] limit.” Mesmerize them into reading, fluently, with e-books. You can do it. Gook luck and may God continue to enlighten you with captivating ideas to encourage his digital age children to read. God’s blessings to you, Clara.

Darrell,
I absolutely love the creation and use of eBooks as an instructional strategy. I even love it as a way to keep my son busy.
I can see eBooks being used to develop almost any reading component. It can be used to assess student writing as well.
From my experience, watching someone create an eBook is exciting and made me want to create one too!! I can see my students experiencing this sort of excitement and motivation.
The face that a student can say ' I made this' and the feeling of pride and accomplishment that goes along with it is all a teacher/parent needs.
Don't fret Darrell, as Clara said, once you are motivated by your love for teaching, you will create fantastic work.
